Balm of Gilead

July 2022 | North River, NY

Region: Adirondacks, Siamese Pond Wilderness

The background: It was expected to be a hot, very humid summer day, which altered my hiking plans and decision a bit. I was staying in nearby North Creek and wanted to get in a hike before heading to Lake George to swim and cool-off. After some googling and AllTrails searching, I came upon this gem - and what a treat it ended up being. I had my eye on Peaked Mountain (same area), but given the length and the heat expected, I knew it was best to keep it short. I ended up enjoying an incredible morning to myself, only seeing 2 other couples on this trail on the way up and out.

The hike: 2.5 miles (4.02km) out-and-back to the viewpoint, although easy to create a loop or explore other trails if looking to spend more time here. The trails are well-marked and maintained. Elevation gain approx. 500 feet (152.4m.)

Getting to the trailhead: from I-87, take exit 23 and hop onto US-9N. Note, you will pass a Stewart’s, Dunkin, McDonald’s, and large Price Chopper if taking this route. In 4.2 miles, turn left onto route NY- 28S for 21 miles. Make a left onto Thirteenth Lake Road (you will see the post office and Adirondack Adventures on the left side corner.) Drive 4 miles and continue on to Garnett Hill Lodge for the “section 2” parking lot. There is no fee, and you will not have cell service at the lot. Open in winter for snow shoeing. For reference, it’s about a 45-minute drive northwest from the village of Lake George.

An ideal day and what you can pair this hike with: Want to make the most of your time in this section of wilderness? Head over to Peaked Mountain (same area, but you can park slightly closer to the trailhead for this one.) I haven’t personally hiked it yet, but have only heard positive sentiments about it (just note it is about 8 miles round-trip.)

Other options in shorter driving distance:

  • Moxham Mountain (25 minute drive)

  • Chimney Mountain (35 minute drive)

  • OK Slip Falls (15 minute drive- I haven’t been yet!)

  • Grab lunch or dinner in nearby North Creek if heading east, or Indian Lake if heading west on route 28.
