Treadway Mountain
November 3, 2022 | Paradox, NY
Region: Pharaoh Lakes Wilderness
The hike: 8 miles (13.67km) round-trip out-and-back. Approx. 1,300 ft. of elevation gain (396.2m.) Start out on Grizzle Ocean Trail; turn right onto Clear Pond Trail, then turn left onto Treadway Mountain Trail to summit.
Getting to the trailhead: you’ll be parking at Putnam Pond DEC Campground. From I-87, take exit 28 towards Ticonderoga. Turn right onto NY-74 E for 12 miles. Then, turn right into County Road 39 (Putts Pond Road) for about 4 miles until the end of the road. Follow the signs for the trailhead and pass (or pay during the summer season) the booth, and then follow the signs to park (it is shared with the boat launch.)
From Lake George, it’s about a 50-minute drive. The nearest town is Ticonderoga, which has gas stations, Walgreens, Dunkin’ Donuts, restaurants, etc. about 15 minutes east.
Fee to park: During the summer season when the campground is open, the fee is $7/vehicle; off-season, no fee (and the booth won’t be open.)
An ideal day and what you can pair this hike with: To extend your day in this section of the park, or if you are camping, you can add on Pharaoh Mountain (this would be a very long day - I have not personally done it.) About a 25-minute drive away is Swede Mountain Fire Tower (note it’s closed during hunting season) a nice, easygoing trail that you could add on. Heading back toward the thruway, you could add on Severance Mountain in Schroon Lake, another light option to cool-down.
If this was your hike of the day and it’s time to eat, check out Paradox Brewery (in North Hudson) or DeCesare’s for pizza and Italian food in Schroon Lake.
